Witches’ Brew
Packaging, 2022
Gruit, an herbal alternative to hops, was once essential in medieval brewing, enhancing both flavor and quality. Though largely replaced, some breweries still use it to craft historically inspired beers. Among them, 5 Horns Brewery embraces this tradition, blending intriguing ingredients into complex, enigmatic brews—perhaps with unexpected side effects.
In fact, these are no ordinary beers; their recipes draw from three legendary witches—Baba Yaga, the wise and wild Slavic crone; Circe, the Greek enchantress of transformation; and Marie Laveau, the powerful Voodoo queen of New Orleans. Today, women reclaim symbols once used against them, freely expressing themselves without fear. Witchcraft endures as a potent metaphor for nonconformity, liberation, and resistance against lingering patriarchy.
